2023 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES – The Honda Africa Twin range is so good that it’s a shame of riches. Technology. Comfort. Reliability that you can count on, come rain or shine, travel across continents, or holiday weekends.

And best of all, there are four different African Twins to choose from. Our standard Africa Twin is a great choice for serious off-road fans. They offer special features such as electronically controlled suspension, adjustable windshields, larger fuel tanks, heated grips, tubeless tires, and more.

Plus, both are available with Honda’s manual transmission or automatic DCT transmission, one of the best technical-riding advantages ever.

Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES Features

Power
TWIN-CYLINDER 1084CC ENGINE
CRF1100L Africa Twin sports one of the best machines ever on an adventure bike. The parallel-twin design is narrow and provides torque everywhere from idle to red lines. You’ll have more low grunts down, and an easy cruise on the open road.

TWIN-PARALLEL ENGINE LAYOUT
The layout of the Africa Twin parallel-twin engine makes the motor shorter from front to back. That means the front wheel can slip closer to the engine, shortening the wheel’s axle distance and making the bike more nimble off the road and on the sidewalk.

TWIN INTAKE
Africa Twin uses a unique twin air-intake with two vertical filtration elements. All that clean air helps the machine deliver excellent performance, even in prolonged operation in dusty conditions.

UNICAM MACHINE DESIGN
Unicam engine design® Honda’s exclusive engine helps us deliver Africa Twin compact cylinder head for optimal engine placement.

COMPACT DUAL-CATALYZER EXHAUST
Using the same muffler-valve technology as our CBR1000RR Superbike, Africa Twins’ new exhaust reducer helps lower emissions while highlighting power cuts and output.

Techniques
CRUISE CONTROL
Here’s one of the worst kept secrets in the motorcycle world — Honda’s Africa Twins make great long-distance touring bikes. To that effect, we have equipped our Africa Twin model with cruise control, just like our Gold Wings. Your next adventure really starts a few hundred miles away? No problem!

THROTTLE WITH WIRE
The throttle-by-wire system greatly expands the flexibility of the Africa twin. You get seven levels of Honda Selectable Torque Control. You can also choose from four power delivery modes: Tour, Urban, Gravel, and fourth user-programmable. First used on our RC213V-S, throttle-by-wire is an excellent example of how Honda technology works for you.

CRANK PHASE 270 DEGREES
Most twins use a 180-degree crank. when reducing the Africa Twin to 270 degrees, you get unique power delivery that’s easy to modulate, especially in terrain where traction is challenging.

SELECTABLE ABS
Our Africa Twin 2021 model offers two ABS modes: on-road and off-road. The third setting lets you turn off the rear ABS altogether to drive dirt.

CORNERING ANTI-LOCK BRAKES
The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) comes with a standard integrated with a 6-axis IMU, it knows when you lean in, and compensates for it.

DRY-SUMP MACHINE
The design of the Africa Twin dry-sump machine is the only way to go. A more compact sump increases ground clearance and eliminates the vulnerability of conventional wet sumps.

LOW CENTER OF GRAVITY, COMPACT MASS
Heavy components such as batteries are as close to the bike’s center of gravity as possible and using a compact engine, Africa Twin provides a superior platform for excellent handling.

WATER PUMP
Can you see the Air Africa Twin pump? Trap question! It’s tucked behind the right side cover, out of danger. There are no vulnerable hoses leading up to it either, a weakness on some bikes. Driven by a balancing shaft, in the case of tip-overs or in rocky parts, it is one less thing to worry about.

LIGHTWEIGHT LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES
Conventional batteries are notoriously heavy—which is why we gave Africa Twin a high-tech and lightweight lithium-ion battery.

Handling
LONG-TRAVEL FRONT SUSPENSION
Africa Twin doesn’t just look like an adventure bike—it’s a real deal. Exhibit A: See the suspension ahead of its long journey. The inverted Showa fork is fully adjustable with a large 45mm tube and a 9.1-inch ride — the front-most travel in the 1000cc off-road class.

STEEL FRAME
This Africa Twin has a frame that is almost four pounds lighter than our previous motor. And while it may be lighter, we perfected it by making the steering head more resistant to twists.

SEMI-DOUBLE-CRADLE-FRAME
Africa Twin has been proven in countless Honda dirtbikes. In principle, it’s similar to the design we use on our CRF450R Rally bikes—machines designed to perform in challenging Dakar rallies and similar events.

PISTON CALIPERS
Upfront, the Africa Twin features twin four-piston brake calipers for strong braking performance. The radial-mount design also helps make them stiffer, improving the feel of the brakes and controls.

43 DEGREE STEERING LOCK
With 43 degrees of steering locks both left and right, the Africa Twin provides excellent maneuverability in narrow lanes.

SMOOTH SWINGARM
The Swingarm Africa Twin 2021 is lightweight and powerful, as it uses technology developed on our CRF450R motocrosser.

HOLLOW AXLE SHAFT
Africa Twin uses a large-diameter hollow steel axle at the front and back. super-powerful, durable, but also lightweight: a combination that describes almost everything associated with this motor.

HONDA SELECTABLE TORQUE CONTROL
offers Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC). You can dial in the type of power delivery you want for an existing condition. The Honda Selectable Torque Control has seven settings for a variety of conditions, from sidewalks to fast, loose fire roads to challenging singletracks. You can also turn it off.

WHEELIE CONTROLS
The front and rear wheel speed sensors in cooperation with Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) allow you to perform the dial-in three levels of wheelie control. There’s also an “off” position—you’re a wheelie control here.

EQUESTRIAN MODE
DCT models offer six driving modes: Tour, Urban, Gravel, Off-Road, User 1, and User 2. The last two let you customize the system to your individual preferences.

REAR SUSPENSION
Not only is the Pro-Link rear suspension® the Africa Twin ride level fully customizable, but it also offers a 220mm stroke for an 8.7-inch rear wheel ride. Even better, there are special remote preload adjustments—you just rotate the knob comfortably, and you can compensate for various loads such as a passenger or a full pannier.

TIRES AND WHEELS
Real adventure bikes use talking wheels because they better survive ding and hits than off-road rides. The Africa Twin model has a 21-inch front and an 18-inch rear for superior performance, especially when it comes to off-road driving.

Comfort
Apple CarPlay
Apple CarPlay integrates a compatible iPhone into your new Africa Twin. That means you can use your iPhone® and easily access Apple Maps, Apple Music, and other services. You’ll have access to weather, playlists, and phone numbers as you board.

The available Bluetooth enabled wireless headset lets you communicate more easily than ever before. And best of all, with more apps available every day, Apple CarPlay™ keeps the technology and comfort of your motorcycle at the cutting edge.

TFT TOUCH SCREEN DISPLAY
Africa Twins has a 6.5-inch touch panel LCD multi-information dashboard screen. You can also choose between three screens, depending on how much information you want to see at once. The display also allows Africa Twin to offer integrated Apple CarPlay.

SIX-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION
The Africa Twin has a conventional six-speed manual gearbox with a clutch lever mounted on the handlebars. It’s a proven, tough design that’s a little lighter as well.

OPTIONAL ALUMINUM BAGGAGE
Our optional three-piece hard luggage will definitely be one of your favorite accessories. All three bags have weatherproof liners, and the top box is large enough to hold a full-face helmet. And all three boxes use the same lock as well.

Comfort
HIGHER HANDLEBARS
Last year we raised the handlebars 22.5mm higher. It helps open the cockpit and works along with seats and windshields to give you a more comfortable rider triangle for long days in the saddle.

ALUMINUM HANDLEBARS RUN
Another example of fitting premium equipment into Africa twin wherever we can, the aluminum handlebars are lighter than steel units. Lapel designs from thinner diameters under your grasp to thicker sections in the upper clamps, and is refined for optimal bending and rigidity.

NARROW SEATS
It makes it easier to move on top of the motor, and also makes it easier to get a foot on the ground in the floodlights or in the parking lot.

NARROWER REAR SUBFRAMES
Two things here: First, removable aluminum subframes, to assist in service and repair. Second, we narrowed it by 40mm last year. It helps the whole bike feel narrower and more agile—a big plus in challenging terrain.

FAIRING TYPE RALLY
Long-distance riders know there is no substitute for real fairing, which is why we spent so many hours getting Africa Twin right. It gives you a great balance between wind and weather protection, without being too big or heavy for a serious off-road ride.

BIAXIAL BALANCING
Using balancing elements on two axes, Honda engineers were able to undo the primary vibration and connectors of the engine. we can install the machine solidly for superior strength and handling, but you still get an extraordinarily smooth and vibration-free ride.

ATHLETIC EQUESTRIAN POSITION
Adventure riding is an active sport, and it means you should be able to move with your bike naturally and athletically. Africa Twin is very narrow, and the triangular peg-bar-chair lets you move up and forward and far back as well, to improve handling, especially in demanding trail conditions.
